LOS ANGELES [ ABN NEWS ] — On Tuesday 29 April 2014, H.S.H. Princess Charlene of Monaco will receive the “Champion of Children Award” in Los Angeles at the 26th Annual Spring Luncheon organised by The Colleagues at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. She will be presented with the award by the Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon during the event hosted by the actress and model, Angie Harmon.

Created in 1950, The Colleagues is an association of women helping to combat child abuse. Over the years the award has been presented to individuals including Nancy Reagan, Betty Ford and Audrey Hepburn. The proceeds from the luncheon will benefit the Children’s Institute Inc. which takes care of over 20,000 children in the Los Angeles area.

On 27 April, H.S.H. Princess Charlene took part in a “Water Safety” and “Learn to Swim” day organised by Her Foundation in Tustin, California in partnership with the Safer 3 Water Safety Foundation. Accompanied by five-time Olympic medallist Dara Torres, one of Her Foundation’s ambassadors, She met with disadvantaged children from the “Village of Hope” at the Blue Buoy Swim School. Due to the support of the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, the children at this centre will enjoy swimming lessons throughout the year.

“The Safer 3 Water Safety Challenge” then brought together the young and not-so-young in games based on drowning prevention.

The Princess also used the occasion to present five rescue boards to the International Surf Lifesaving Association. These rescue boards, specially designed by Her Foundation, will be distributed across the United States where drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death for children under five.

The Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation aims to promote the practice of sport, as a vehicle for education and development in children. Its main objective is to save lives by combating drowning. The Foundation has set itself the mission of raising public awareness about the dangers of the water, educating children and teaching them to swim.
